CVS and Flash?
Recently I have been working on different approaches to project management. As projects become larger and more team members are involved, a good methodology to managing those projects is crucial. As I did my research on the internet, and as I have browsed many open source projects, the use of CVS seemed synonymous.
My question is, can we use CVS in flash application development? I encourage everyone to chime in and tell me what you think.
First, for all of you that are still wondering what CVS is, I would encourage you to visit a few of these links. Also, I will be writing a small tutorial regarding how you can set up your own CVS server and how to access it.
http://www.cvshome.org (The official CVS Home Page)
http://cvsbook.red-bean.com/cvsbook.html (An online book about CVS)
http://www.webmasterbase.com/article.php?pid=0&aid=831 (A GREAT article that serves as an overview of how CVS can benefit all developers)
http://www.durak.org/cvswebsites/ (Another CVS resource geared specifically for web developers)
Yep I have for years used cvs with flash. What does that mean? It means tons of include files (thats a good thing anyway) and no merging for fla files. It has always worked pretty smoothly except for when you have collisions with binary files. But those are easily fixed (but still suck) I would recommend CVS and Flash and make sure 99.9% of source is in include files.

We use CVS extensively to manage our Flash projects and as long as you get all the code in to .as files, it works like a dream and has made multi-developer production far easier!

That is exactly what I was looking into. TONS of includes. The good thing is that doing that seperates the the project into manageable pieces that can be worked on by different team members.
Just another tool that can help flash app. dev. gain legitimacy throughout the programming world. I know that when I talk about object oriented programming in flash and controlling a project through CVS, I have had many of my coding buddies say ‘hey…I should look into that flash thing.’

that would make a good article for the desdev center:
Managing Flash Projects with CVS
do you think developers would be interested in that?

Hi,
we just start to use CVS and Flash. I think it is an excellent addition for a project with more that on developer and even for one person alone it really improved the organisation and reduces hassle in the final phase. The AS 2.0 class structure is IMHO very suitable for CVS especially when it comes to diffs :-) I have to admit that I have not been a great “includer” in MX. Mike is right, write an article about this.
Cheers

Mentioned sollution is only for AS. There are still problems with standard flash items. I cannot believe Macromedia haven’t thought about code management within flash. Maybe there are tools that are converting .fla to some reasonable format and vice versa.

I can’t think of a better reason than that!

I have always looked for a possibility to find information as quick as I can. Now there is the internet. And I really appreciate people like you who take their chance in such an excellent way to give an impression on certain topics. Thanks for having me here.
