Encoding Email Addresses (Fight SPAM!)

with 16 comments

Well, yesterday my brother released his journal site (http://journal.joshdura.com). On it, I wrote a function that encodes email addresses. Many of you were interested in the code, so here it is:

This is pretty much the bare bones, if you have any questions, just drop me an email, , or post something in the comments. Enjoy :)

  1. Hi Dani, I was one who was interested in the code and began to find a neat solution for the encryption of e-mail addresses. I think that solution doesn’t put away most spambots because that code is easy for spambots coders to recognize it. Maybe you want to take a look at the solution I came up with in my blog. It encodes the e-mail address in a serie of numbers that have no meaning to spambots.

  2. or, check out CHris’ swf email encoder (for which he has released a download version for others’ use): http://www.flazoom.com/cooler/1044293284,38406,.shtml

The one over at moik78 looks quite secure. However, I have not yet looked at the code for the swf one. It will probably be a while before spam bots can harvest through swf files, so CHris’ might be best.

  3. Well, Michael i have take a look at it. I have think about it before but that doesn’t solve the problem because Chris is passing the e-mail to Flash through the parameters of the movie and if you take a look at the source code of the page all the e-mails are there ready to be harvested.
The emails are in the swf but in the HTML too.
Today I will post an example to download and how it works.

  13. I am trying to validate a master webpage, with encoded email addresses, using the W3c SHTML validator, but it fails on the encoding.

I found this page during a web search, but the contact button does not seem to work, and when I click on the “go here” button, that says page no found.

I wonder if your code is what I am looking for?

    Thank you
