All About the Adobe Flash Platform

Flash MX in the Real World

with 33 comments

As you can probably tell, I have not had the time to update my blog as often as I wish. One reason is because of all the work me and my brother have been doing for our clients.

One site that we released this week was www.bvcoins.com (although it is not yet fully completed.) Now, I would not usually mention my own work, but I believe this site represents the power the new MX platform has in addressing the wants and needs of clients.

We were approached to develop a site, in a very short time frame, that included a feature that would allow customers to zoom in and view hi-res images of rare coins (See the zoom feature on any one of the coins). As we discussed this with the client, we decided that a Flash MX developed application would do the trick. Why? Couldn’t we have just used a Java applet, or placed a hi-res image right on a page? The customer told us that he also wanted to add video and audio to the pages. As we considered the options, we relalized that Flash MX could handle all of these very well. Although only a minority of people have the new v.6 of the player installed, using different platforms and delivery techniques for each of these features would have raised the potential of inevitable user dissatisfaction and confusion.

So, here we are, selling Flash MX to the customer as the delivery platform. And, it worked :) Not only do we feel like Flash evangelists, but I believe this truly is the best option for the customer and user.

- Flash MX offers a single plugin for multiple media types.
- Development cycle, vs. Java, is faster.
- Development cycle, vs. Java is cheaper.
- Making additions to the site functionality will not require current users to download any other plugin.
- Browser compatibility within flash is almost eliminated.
- Flash plugin is a relatively small download.
- The installation of the plugin is simple, from a user standpoint.

Do you sell ‘Flash MX’ to your customers? What reasons do you or would you give?

  1. A very nice feature. One thing that would be cool would be if you could drag the image when zoomed in (rather than the strange click method). Also I wondered what the reasons were for emplying flash 6 for this rather than flash 5?

  2. Nice zoom feature, but but it doesn’t seem to work in Mozilla 1.0 or Opera 6.03.

  3. I know :) This is just version .1 . We were forced to do this very quickly. The reason we did not use flash 5 is because the movie dynamically loads the JPEG images depending on the product id. Thanks for the comments and suggestions, we will definitely try to implement them (and fix the bug or two with browser incompatibility).

  4. Daniel,

Nice feature! The zoom works very intuitive, kinda like the Java-applets on the web, but much smaller in download size :-)
One other reason I ususally mention to use Flash (not any version) is the fact that 98% of the webcommunity has a Flash player. Now, I know, that’s Flash content. I heard a prediction from MM that they think by the end of this year, over 90% will view Flash MX content. That’s quite some audience!

  5. I really hope it is 90%! I remember at FFNY this year, the guy from ESPN made some predictions regarding saturation of the Flash MX player that were backed up by some pretty good evidence. Anyone remember what his prediction was?

  6. Hey Dan

Nice work, I agree with the need to be able to drag the zoomed in image around…

I also think the rollovers for the navigation need some definition – the white text on a light blue has very little contrast making it harder to read. While us young guys might be able to, I’m guessing a lot of coin collectors are older and its a fact that color contrast definitions are harder and harder to pick up for them.

Otherwise .. well done, nice use of integrated flash work – your right MX finally frees us up to do what we want/need to do. DWMX and FMX are so powerfull together ….

  7. Flash MX Saturation ….

Sadly I personally don’t think it is anywhere near as high as MM say it is.

I would honestly say that maybe 80% of the web community can see flash 5 content …

Until MacOS X and Windows ship with Flash Player I don’t think we’ll see 90%+ Flash MX saturation .. I deal with a lot of corporates and their IT guys don’t like flash and don’t let them install anything more than what comes with the browsers – which at last stand was Flash 5?

But yeah … This is just NZ – so maybe the rest of the world is different …
