  1. Giving it away, eh? Just shows what a waste of time Flex is. No doubt they’ll end-of-life it within 18 months.

Bye Flex! Thanks for the memories!

  3. End of life? Waste of time? I am working in Flex and it is “insanely great!” Flex is expanding the Flash/Flex developer community. This “non-commercial deployment licensing program” is perfect for getting the word out.

Milo and Jo„o, if you haven’t tried Flex you should. If you are Flash developers, you will be able to deliver the same application in 1/3 the time. If you are not Flash developers, then Flex is definately for you. Flex gives non Flash developers the ability to use components to create swf’s without getting entangled in timeslines, layers, nested movieClips and other possibly alien concepts.

  4. One important note, Flex is for applications. Flex is not an animation tool.

Flash and Flex appeal to different audiences. Think Flash for animation and design, and Flex for forms, catalogs, reporting, business processes, etc.

Both are branches of the same code base. Both use ActionScript 2.0. Both use version 2 Components. Both compile to swf’s. Both run in the Flash 7 Player. Content created in Flash can be repurposed in Flex as Components (SWCs).

The big difference is the process. The power of the Flash IDE is timelines, layers and design tools. The power of the Flex interface is declarative MXML for laying out interfaces, bindings to reduce hand coding of event handlers, and ActionScript 2.0 for everything else.

Flash and Flex play strongly to different audiences. Flex enormously expands the audience for Flash technologies. Flex will also drive demand for Flash developers (for customization, for SWCs, etc.).

What is good for Flex is good for Flash. And what is good for Flash is good for Flex.

If you are an application developer, you really have to check Flex out! (A good place to start is the Flex Samples Explorer at http://www.macromedia.com/flex/samples/explorer/explorer.mxml )
