History 2.0?

There is a very interesting article on MSNBC.com today about the recent announcement from Amazon announcing the new search functionality on thier site. If you were unaware, Amazon now is offering the ability for you to search the text of ‘only’ 120,000 books. The author of the article successfully persuaded me to see that not only is the new search a revolution for the internet, but the beginning of maybe a new way for us to view the past, and the present. In other words, maybe it is the end of the Information Age, and the beginning of the Information Age 2.0.

  1. What’s the big fuss? Okay so Amazon “scanned” some books and used an OCR to stick that text into a database. Cool .. sure that is neat. But ummm haven’t historians of really OLD books being doing this for YEARS? I know there are digital copies of REALLY old books, bibles etc, where the text has been entered in both Greek, Hebrew or other old text AND in English, allowing uneducated plebs like me to enjoy these OLD books.

What Amazon have done is cheapened it by taking this awesome historical, novel idea and putting a commercial application too it. Sure it’s a great seller and the article is right it is going to help researchers and others, as Amazon get more and more books online.

BUT search engines already index PDF, why not just store a PDF copy of the book on a server? You can control the print and save and few options of a PDF. Publishers can upload a PDF from the copy that went to the printers, Amazon don’t need to waste time scanning the books and converting from image to text … hell Google’s server technology will auto index PDF into a database making search time LIGHTNING fast.

Congrats to Amazon .. but boo hoo to MSNBC reporters…. this really is nothing new, it’s just a new commercial application of an old idea. Still, funky none the less :)

I wonder if I can make use of this through AWS?? hmmm

  2. It is silly if they think that people are actually going to search their way to stealing books.
