How’s work?

So, how is work for you guys? Getting more jobs than usual, or still recovering from the downturn in the economy. I have been quite busy lately with more and more requests for work. To me it seems like people are recovering from the shock of the dot-com burst, where they saw the internet as a fad that had reached its peak. I am hearing more and more from clients that they believe the internet will play a major part in their business plans. So, I have been busy preparing quotes, etc? How about you guys? Just wondering how the overall field is faring right now.

Well, here in Madrid, Spain. The economic situation is not as bad as in other european countries but working as a designer it’s becoming more and more difficult. Corportations don’t invest in technology and Internet.
The situation will be worse if the f**ing war starts.

Business is good for me - in fact, the problem right now is that I’m too busy to put as much work into my personal projects (FlashOS2 and gModeler) as I’d like. Always on the lookout for another interesting project though (I prefer quality to quantity). My girlfriend hardly recognizes me any more, methinks.

Business is pretty decent lately. Granted, the economy is softer and perhaps if I was more focused on direct hire, it would be tougher. Though I do agree with you Daniel, things do seem to be smoothing out and more realistic expectations seem to be filtering back to the surface.

Overall, lets see what happens this summer, and what the war machine generates. Realistically, considering all the arms sellers in both the US and Europe, my guess is a boom year is coming. One can never tell. So keep in mind Airbus has quite a few factories in Spain, so expect a few more orders soon, presumably.

Overall some of the changes in content on web as a direct result of Flash I think will drive new revenue streams that have yet to be touched. Perhaps we will see the real multimedia based web that has been promised for some many years.

Oh, and Daniel .. reminder, I am due one of those quotes too ;)

My $0.02 - the economy is getting better too quickly.

There are still companies who produce ‘fated-to-disgust’ work, that I wish would die off.

Technologies like Flash got a bad rap because you could produce ‘F.T.D’ works - and because companies with no skill were able to stay alive.

I wish the economy would have gotten worse and stayed worse for longer - to kill off the embarrasments in our communities.

Now if we could just prevent George W. from going to war? Then it would stay that way too…

Yeah Brent, I sometimes wish that some of the ‘guy next door’ designers and developers would have died off too. I sometimes wonder though if the economy being down only proliferates them even further. With companies being so tight, they are more apt to say something to the effect of ‘My son can make a web page, maybe I should have him do it.’ It just makes me shiver to think about it.

But, all in all, it does seem that the economy is making a resurgance (knock on wood). Maybe this is a blip in the overall scheme, but I am enjoying it. Also, war usually has a positive effect on work in Dallas because of all the defense industries here. Not that I am saying I want to go to war, but if it does happen, work will probably pick up a bit more.
