Reporters are not intrinsically infallible, y’know…. ;-)
When they go to print or video they can’t recall an error. I suspect some believe that the web allows transparent changes at any time, which is true as far as it goes, but doesn’t take into account the humans and aggregators which already picked up on a story.
In blogs the culture is to say “hey, I made a mistake, here’s an update”. But newspapers and magazines evolved with a different set of constraints, different culture, so they have to find ways to integrate a new practice, and they can’t just adopt a fitting new practice as we could.
Yeah, it is interesting how apoiled we can be by the blog format. Sometimes it is pretty scary how wrong reporters can be in thier representation of the facts. You would think that it would be easier for electronic types of mass media controlled by large corporations to correct themselves and post a message that does say “by the way, we screwed up here.” Of course, that probably wouldn’t be too healthy for business. I guess that they figure erasing it is just as good.
Sometimes in the newspapers I read the corrections, and it is shocking how a front page headline be the subject of a one line error correction listing on the last page in the bottom corner. I guess I will just have to get my information from blogs instead :)
