Macromedia: A View from the Inside

with 29 comments

So, have you ever wondered what its like inside the hallowed halls of Macromedia? Have you ever wanted to ask one of the engineers something about that product you love so much? Ever wondered who it is that is working behind the scenes? I know I did before I worked here. Lately I have become somewhat accustomed to the idea that if I have a question about the Flash Player, I can walk over a row and talk to an engineer who designed the feature. I have gotten to know many of the amazing people who work here and it has provided a lot of insight into the real vision that the company has. I have also been able to have a lot of fun, learning the fun little quirks of the Macromedia culture, just like any workplace has.

So, I thought I would start to crack open the door a little. If you have any question at all, whether technical or quirky, please submit it to questions[at]danieldura[dot]com and I will answer them! Well, maybe not every single one, there may be to many for that. But, I will pick one day a week (maybe Friday) and answer one or more of the questions, provide photos if possible, and for technical questions I may be able to con one of our engineers into answering the question directly.

This is meant to be both fun and informative. So here are a few examples of questions you can ask:

- Who has the coolest cube at Macromedia?
- Where do you guys eat lunch?
- Who is the product manager for the Flash Player team?
- Can you tell me how to use the X feature of X product?
- Or anything!

What you can’t ask:
- When is the next version of X coming out?

So, you are probably wondering if there is any incentive to doing this? Well, I can’t promise anything, but I do have some random pieces of Macromedia schwag laying around that I can definitely part with. So, if your question(s) gets answered, I will try and send you something.

So, here is your chance, ask away, submit as many questions as you like…. questions[at]danieldura[dot]com

  3. Christian Cantrell tells me that Macromedia has an office building which was built inside a parking garage. Christian Cantrell tells me that Macromedia has an office building which was built inside a parking garage. I hear that to get employers to work in a *parking garage* that Macromedia made special efforts to make it extremely cool. The idea fascinates me and I’d love to see some pictures and hear a little more about it.

  6. I visited Macromedia almost a year ago, and I have to tell you, they’ve got the most spacious self-service coffee room/kitchen I’ve ever seen! :)

Granted, I haven’t been to the working areas of many big companies, but it’s great to have a place that doesn’t get too crowded, and where you can mix your coffee and cream to your own taste…

  10. Who picks out the schwag for Macromedia? They have very good taste! I’m always impressed with what you guys give out, from notepads to memory cards. And how can I get a catalog for my own marketing? :-)

  11. At FlashForward I snaped up a short conversation about Macromedians, who adopt or give birth to a child receive an incentive for this *action. Macromedia adopts an Amazon Rainforest in the name of the child. Is this true?

I just checked with Cristina Quaid, whose cube is over-the-wall from mine… she confirmed that lots of different people in the company make their own gift purchases, and do so from a variety of vendors… it’s hard to pick out one specific source, sorry.

This website is often a good resource, though, and lots of buyers here use it:

I’m guessing, though, that it’s only because this site doesn’t usually add corporate logos…. ;-)

  13. What’s the corporate culture of Macromedia like, and do everyone work in cubicles? Are those the ‘i wish i could actually move my **s in here’ type of cubes or the ‘it’s more like an office without a door’ type of cubes. I’m just wondering, because here in Europe we often don’t have offices with cubicles. ( Ask Mike, he actually visited my office once.. ) :-)

  23. When you’re hired by Macromedia you can choose the machine you’re gonna use? I mean, if want to use a notebook or a desktop, Windows or Mac, Linux or something else, can I choose? If so, what brands do you folks use? Dell, IBM? Macs?

  24. How do you guys react to comments via Blogs and so forth ditching your abilities with the various products.

I know Officially “you take all criticism under advisment and hope to return a proactive response” – but… deep in the hulls of that which is Mothership Macromedia, you have to go “ahhh this guy/gal is a fair dinkium clown, he/she should pull their head in”

I did like the prev question, in that “how do you come up with code names and whats the reasoning behind it”

Also, What inspired engineers to come up with key features in a product?

Flash Remoting – from XML to AMF, what motivated such a concept.
